Father's Day June 21st!

So Father's day is less than a month a way, what do you have planned??  A BBQ??  Breakfast??  Fishing??  Just hanging out??  Sharing family history??

My sister-in-law asked me a while back to do her a favor for a gift for her father for father's day.  She asked me to do research on her fathers side and put together a binder.  Starting with her father it goes through 5 generations.

Now because you double your numbers every generation you go back I kept it limited to information on the parents.  While there is plenty of information on the children of each set of parents I would probably need more than one binder or a really big one.

It only required research in two state; New York and North Carolina.  North Carolina has a wealth of information online (through Ancestry).  Which is good as I live in New York.

The binder is divided by generation than sub-divided by family.  There will be photos that we could get our hands on included.  It was a very fun project (still in progress).

So what are you doing for the fathers in your life?  If your having a family get together talk to all your family members and collect research information for yourself and to share later.  Put together something to give to family members of research you have already done.  Do something fun and family history related!!

Term of the day!!

GAZETTEER

a book which alphabetically names and describes the places in a specific area.

An example would be a gazetteer of a county would name and describe all of the towns, lakes, rivers, and mountains in the county.

So how would this be a good genealogical tool?
It can help you located towns within a state and a county.
It can tell you about what life was life during a particular time frame. Maybe you have heard that a family member did a lot of hunting or fishing a particular lake or mountain.  Is that lake in the town in which you believe your family is from?  Remember there are lots of towns and counties in different states with the same names.  Some states have multiple towns with the same name.  This would be a great tool to narrow it down.

Name that town?!?!

ACRA, New York 12405

Located in Green County, New York.  It is a hamlet west of Cairo. Acra has a populations of 454.

This village lies along the Mohican Trail to the northwest of Cairo village and has a wide view of the surrounding country and the Catskills. The first church was the Presbyterian, a few years later sold to the Baptist. Its first inn or tavern was built by Moses Olmsted, and its first store by Joseph Lyon.

John Howell, a friend of Judge Daniel Sayre, and great-grandson of Edward Howell, founder of Southampton, came to Green County in 1794, bought a farm and built the Howell homestead on the road from Acra to Centerville, and was founder of the First Presbyterian church in Acra, in 1795. He died in 1815, aged seventy-one years.  His wife Mehitable died three years later.

FROM ME

So recently I did a search for genealogy apps on my ipad.  There are a lot more now then there used to be.  But while writing them down for me to start reviewing this one caught my eye and I knew this was the one I was going to review.  At first glance it looked exciting, super cute and fun.

Lets start with the basics.  It's a free download for the ipad.  That is nice.  You can build a tree from the ground up.  You can add cute backgrounds or leave it plain.  You add the persons name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, parents, spouses, and children.  You can also add their picture.

The process of adding people is simple but it it's not.  If in the process of adding someone you click on something and you missed a step, like not adding the gender, it will go back and delete everything you put in on that person.  Also you will notice from my screen shots that the app has both English and French.

When you add children to a marriage it will only list the parent you clicked on to add them.  You will have to add the other parent.  It doesn't add both parents of the marriage.  I find that odd.

The tree apparently goes in a straight line and it is set to one side of the screen.  The ads are annoying and when I click on "no more ads" and then click on buy nothing happens.  You are supposed to be able to  import and export a GedCom, PDF export, Print, Back up, and restore but those are items you have to purchase.  I don't know if its individual purchase or just one purchase.  Once again when I click on buy NOTHING HAPPENS.  So I can't even tell you the cost.

Overall I was disappointed in the app.  It is need of work.  I think if they work on it and fix things it might actually be a super cute app.

I would love to hear if you have tried it and what you thought!!!
